More About Rwanda

History of Rwanda
With its capital, Kigali, located on a plateau between steep hills and volcanoes, and landlocked by Tanzania, Burundi, Uganda and Congo, Rwanda is one of Africa’s most densely populated countries. This small country—almost twice as big as Denmark—only became independent in 1962. In 1994, after years of ethnic conflict that killed more than 800,000 people (about 20 percent of its population), it emerged from genocide to become one of Africa’s safest and fastest-growing economies. Today Rwanda is home to an incredible amount of biodiversity: It has over 500 species of birds alone!
Top Destinations in Rwanda
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to over half of Africa’s mountain gorillas and one of only a handful of places in Africa where you can still track gorillas. Nyungwe Forest National Park, also called The Land of a Thousand Hills for its towering Virungas, is where you can go on safari at night. Lake Kivu, which borders Rwanda and Congo, is known as one of Africa’s clearest lakes. Volcanoes National Park contains five active volcanoes including Mount Karisimbi (14,787 feet), which offers some of the best views in all of Africa. Akagera National Park is home to rhinos as well as hippos and lions while Gishwati Nature Reserve boasts large herds of elephants that are frequently seen by visitors. Lake Ihema Nature Reserve has large numbers of crocodiles along with hippos and birds that nest in trees such as herons, storks and eagles.
